Reviews
This page is dedicated to in-depth, spoiler-free reviews for the books I read! If there is ever an instance of spoilers, I will indicate it in my summary.
Hi everyone! Today I'm reviewing Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. This is going to be a short review because it's technically a reread. However, it's been a few years since I read Fangirl, and I only recently starting reviewing books. Fangirl is about Cath, who is starting her freshman year of college. Unlike most freshmen, Cath is not excited for college. She's worried about how her dad will cope alone at home now that Cath and her identical twin sister-Wren- are away at school. Moreover, Wren is ready for "the college experience," while all Cath wants to do is stay in her dorm room and write fanfiction for the Simon Snow series. However, Cath soon starts to realize that as much as she loves Simon Snow, there are a few people at college worth meeting.
I absolutely loved Fangirl the first time I read it, and I have been wanting to reread it for a while now. I related to Cath and always imagined I'd be very similar to her when I started college. Now that I've actually started college, I realize that Cath and I are very similar in a lot of ways. That's part of the reason I wanted to reread Fangirl. In a world where nearly everyone seems to love college and the typical experiences associated with it, it can get pretty lonely for a bookworm who physically can't procrastinate and has no interest in partying. I wanted to read about someone like me if only to prove that I wasn't a complete anomaly. Cath and I would both rather be in fictional worlds than real ones. We both deal with social anxiety. We both would rather spend weekends in our dorm rooms than partying like crazy. We both seemed perfectly okay academically in college but struggled socially. We both missed home like crazy. Honestly, the only main difference between Cath and I is that I don't write fanfiction- nothing against it, it's just not for me. Also, I do not have an identical twin, but I do have two older brothers, one of whom is a senior at the same college and immensely extroverted, hilarious, and well-liked. So in a way, I could relate to Cath's relationship with Wren. As much as I love Cath as a character and being able to relate to her, there are so many more aspects I loved about this book. I loved the focus on mental health conditions in Cath and her family. I loved the presence of fandoms. I loved the Simon Snow exerts that always related back to the story. I loved Reagan, and of course, I loved Levi. If only all guys could be as nice and friendly as him. Fangirl isn't a perfect book-I realize that. However, it is a really fun and sweet read that still manages to touch back on some serious issues. Mostly, Fangirl is a favorite of mine because it is so refreshing to read about a character that I can relate to so heavily. It's amazing to read about someone like me and realize that even though she goes through some tough situations, she lives through them. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves fandoms and romance. It will forever remain a go-to read of mine. My rating is 5/5 stars. Favorite Quotations: "In new situations, all the trickiest rules are the ones nobody bothers to explain to you (And the ones you can't google.) Like, where does the line start? What food can you take? Where are you supposed to stand, then where are you supposed to sit? Where do you go when you're done, why is everyone watching you?..." "Cath wasn't trying to make new friends here. In some cases, she was actively trying not to make new friends, though she usually stopped short of being rude." "Because I'm the kind of girl who fantasizes about being trapped in a library overnight." "It's just everything. There are too many people. And I don't fit in. I don't know how to be. Nothing that I'm good at is the sort of thing that matters here. Being smart doesn't matter-and being good with words." "But there's nothing more profound that creating something out of nothing. Think about it, Cath. That's what makes a god- or a mother. There's nothing more intoxicating than creating something from nothing. Creating something from yourself." "To really be a nerd, she'd decided, you had to prefer fictional worlds to the real one." "Happily ever after, or even just together ever after, is not cheesy. It's the noblest, like, the most courageous thing two people can shoot for." Happy Reading! Adrianna
